The Idea
“A Christmas market should feel like being let into someone's workshop, not a shopping centre with tinsel on it.”
Rowan Hale · Hollow & Grain
We started in 2019 with four tables in a draughty hall and a rule that has not changed since: everything sold here is made by the person standing behind it. No importers, no buy-and-sell, no printed tealights.
Fifty ateliers, each one chosen by hand. It means the queue for hot chocolate is short, the makers have time to tell you how a bowl was turned, and you can walk out with something no one else on your street owns.
Questions
What people ask.
Anything else, write to us — a person reads it, usually with a coffee.
Do I need a ticket?
No ticket to book — entry is $2 at the door on each of the three days, cash or card. The workshops are the only things you book separately, at the stall on the day.
Is there food and drink?
Yes — hot chocolate from The Cocoa Kitchen, mulled wine from the hall bar, and a rotating cast of soups and pastries from the kitchen at the back of the hall.
Can I pay by card?
Every stall takes card. A few of the smaller makers appreciate cash for anything under ten dollars, but nothing here is cash-only.
Is the hall accessible?
Step-free from the north gate through the whole hall, with a hearing loop at the stage.
Can I bring children?
Please do. There's a wooden play table by the stage, and the makers rather like showing small people how things are made.
Can I sell at the expo?
We take applications for the following season all year. Tell us what you make and we'll be in touch — fifty stalls, chosen carefully.Apply to exhibit
